Week 2_Abiodun Macfoy_ Business Calculus Series: Deriving Simple Cost Equation

Now consider this simple real-life application that was asked by one of my students as an instructor and to the class in general.

Question: A property owner intends to fence a garden close to the road. The fencing next to the road should be sturdier and it cost N500 per foot while the other fencing cost N300 per foot. The garden has an area of 1200 sq/ft

  1. Derive the equation that represents the cost of fencing the garden
  2. Find the dimensions that minimizes the cost of fencing

Solution:

Part A.

Let represent length and represent width. Therefore:

Cost next to the road

Cost of the side opposite the road

Cost of width; since there are 2 sides of the width, it will be represented twice.

Hence the equation becomes:

(1)

Part B.

Area

If we substitute the above into equation (1) above, the problem will be to minimize. Then we have:

                        (2)

Equation (2) can be graphed and traced to determine that will the cost of fencing or we can differentiate equation (2) and solve for

If we differentiate equation (2), we'll have:

Hence

To find that will minimize cost, we substitute into , therefore . The solution to minimize cost has assigned a smaller ft size to the costlier side of the fence which is 30ft.

The length and width that will minimize cost is

  1. Hmmmmmm....... OK Mac, as this is only your W2 posting, I will accept it, but if you continue this approach, you aren't very likely to pass Part IV of your chosen exams.

What I am looking for is the Step by Step approach shown on page 27 of your Engineering Economy, Table 1-1, which I have also sent out in several emails now.

So while I will accept this for your W2 posting, starting with your next posting, I will be expecting to see you following the step by step process.

  2. PS Mac, take the time to look at what Biola and Lanre are doing each week....... Follow the example of people who are getting "Awesome" or WOW comments from me..... THAT is what my expectations are...

  3. Biola? Lanre? SeeGod? Anyone got a suggestion to Mac about how he can get his calculations to show up?

My suggestion to him was to do them in Excel, then copy and paste the excel table into his word document, then post it using word?

    Any other ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks!!!

  4. Hi Dr Paul,
Yes i support your idea of doing it in excel and copying/pasting in word, then posting using word.
Also Abiola had suggested using google chrome browser instead of internet explorer.
    Hope this helps

  5. I think HTML works well for microsoft equations in both internet explorer and google chrome. You may however need to reformat your work after cutting & pasting.

    Hope this helps.
