Week9_Augustine_Oleru_Need for Project Management Training For Nigerian Engineers

PROBLEM STATEMENT:
IS THERE NEED FOR PROJECT MANAGEMENT TRAINING FOR NIGERIAN ENGINEERS?

Over the years, Nigerian Engineers that handles Nigerian projects are found be inexperience and less productive. Most of the executed projects done by these engineers suffer immense dilapidation and deformation. Hence, this situation poses a great trait to industries where these engineers deliver their services. Therefore, it calls for mandatory training for all Nigerian engineers.

Alternatives
a. Nigeria engineers require good project management training in order to be more efficient and effective in carrying out engineering services. Any work done efficiently reduces time spent on that work. Since time is one the determinant factors of any organisation profitability. Nigerian engineer need to be highly efficient in his job. In the other hand, effectiveness brings out the quality of work done and has serious cost implication in the organisation. Therefore should not be neglected.

b. Reduction on the level of unemployed Nigerian graduate depicts the essence why Nigerian engineers require project management training. Statistic shows that One fifth of Nigerian population are unemployed in which two third of this unemployed are engineers. Therefore if these numbers of people are given project management training, it will go a long way to reduce unemployment level and also poverty level will be reduce in the nation.

Outcomes
1. Statistically, if two third out of one fifth of Nigerian population who are engineers are given this training, there will be tremendous growth and development in the economy of this nation.

2. However, if Nigerian engineers are given project management training, there will be high level of productivity in the organisation where these engineers render their services. More so, profitability will be at higher level which enables companies to pay their taxes and invest more in Nigeria, thereby contributing immense to the growth of the nation.

Selection of outcomes
i. Best practises of engineering shows that outcome 1 above is high important because no nation can achieve good result without growth and development. Therefore training is evitable in engineering.

Comparison of alternatives
If the two outcomes stated above are treated independently, the result generated will at minimal level.
But if the two outcomes stated above are merged together, maximum level of result will be attained

Best alternative
i. The best solution remains integrating the two outcomes above which requires that engineers should be continuously trained.

Conclusion and Recommendation
Finally, if productivity increase, contracts are executed more efficiently and effectively and unemployment is reducing, there will be increase in the growth and development in Nigeria economy.

  1. Hmmmmmm....... Great topic, Augustine, but disappointed in your treatment of it....

In terms of project management training, there are in effect, 4 globally recognized options or alternatives:
    1) PMI and their PMP plus specialty credentials
    2) IPMA with their Level D, C or B
    3) APM/OGC's PRINCE2 credential
    4) AACE and their CCC/E plus specialty credentials.

I am going to reject this week's posting and suggest you start out here. http://www.pmworldtoday.net/featured_papers/2010/feb/FP-Giammalvo-PMCertsCompared.html

Then I would like you to reference the Memory Jogger II and/or Chapters 6, 10 and 14 in your Engineering Economy. Explore the various tools/techniques from these references and produce a report that substantiates which training you believe to be the "best" or "most appropriate" to solve the the very real problem you so appropriately defined.
